Perfect Day

Plans for a nice Sunday picnic seemed doomed even before Stanley and Oliver and their families get into the car. First the boys get into a fight and destroy all the sandwiches. Then the car itself keeps acting up, requiring repeated exits and reboardings by the boys, their wives and grouchy, gout-ridden Uncle Edgar. A brick-throwing tiff with a neighbor threatens to escalate into general mayhem until the local parson strolls by. They finally manage to get underway, steering toward an innocent-looking mud puddle in the street.

As she dictates her latest book to a secretary, the action moves backwards and forwards between the 1970s and Barbara\'s young life. Her family was once very wealthy but fell upon hard times and Polly, Barbara\'s mother, always told her that she would marry a duke. However, she marries a drunk who is rough in bed and has a mistress, and she retreats into writing as an escape from him. Ultimately they divorce and she marries his cousin, who encourages her writing and stays with her until his death in the 1960s. There is some irony in the juxtaposition of Barbara\'s flowery prose and the unhappy experience of her own first marriage.$

Time for the secret weapon: a harpoon gun. The fish ties the harpoon line around an old motor, which starts, destroys the boat, and hauls Gabby around like a water-skier. Before returning home, Takako asks Iwakachi to let her bring Taro with her; but their bond is very strong.$
